Lucentis is FDA-approved for Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)

Good news! Recently, Lucentis was approved for Diabetic Macular Edema. This gives
Doctor Tafoya another option for the treatment of this very serious disease. Lucentis
is FDA-approved for DME in a lower dosage than the currently available dosage for
wet age-related macular degeneration. Will Doctor Tafoya use Lucentis for DME? He
says that it will be on a case to case basis. He has great success using Avastin off-
label. Again, the advantage is that even if we get insurance authorization, there is no
guarantee that we will get reimbursed for the price of the medication. Avastin costs
us about $50/dose. Lucentis, even at this lower dosage, is over $1000/dose. We can
afford to lose $50. And being that Doctor Tafoya finds that in most cases, Avastin and
Lucentis work equally well, Pacific Retina Care (sm) will make the best decision for our
patients being cognizant of cost to our patients.
